Yiying Niu, piano — Laureate of the New York International Piano Competition

Yiying Niu

Downtown Music continues its collaboration with the virtuosic young pianists who are prize winners of this venerable contest, this time featuring 2018 winner, Yiying Niu. The afternoon’s program will feature works by Mozart, Murail, Brahms and Kirchner.

Yiying Niu, pianist, was born in Anyang, Henan Province, China. She has appeared internationally in venues in New York, Shanghai, Nanjing, and countries in Europe, including Holland and Spain. An active soloist, Yiying won the Thousand Islands International Piano Competition in 2022. She became the prize winner for the “Best Performance of the Commissioned Work” at the Ninth New York International Piano Competition in 2018, the second prize winner of the Munz Scholarship Competition, as well as an Honorable Mention at the Eisenberg Fried Concerto Competition.

Yiying’s love for chamber music led her to explore a rich repertoire with numerous colleagues. Her commitment to chamber music was recognized when she became the recipient of the Helen Cohn Award for Outstanding Work in Chamber Music as a Pianist. She performed in chamber music recitals at Tianjin Juilliard School in 2021, including pieces by Steve Reich and Robert Schumann. Yiying received a Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2020, and a Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School in 2022. Her primary professors are Marc Silverman and Julian Martin.

She is currently pursuing a DMA degree at the Manhattan School of Music, under the tutelage of Marc Silverman. She has worked with pianists Richard Goode, Robert Levin, Boris Slutsky and Shai Wosner in masterclasses.

This concert is made possible, in part, with the generous support of Beverley and Sabin Streeter.
